The truth is, remodeling with pets can range from excruciatingly awful to just moderately uncomfortable. It depends on the type of animal involved, their personality, and the type of remodeling project.
Many typical dogs and cats get to know the workers coming into your home – and that can often be fun for them! They love the extra company and attention. But overall, remodeling and pets don’t often mix very well.
However, there are things you can do to make the situation more comfortable for everyone.
1. Separate space.

Plan to have a separate space for your pet to hang out while work is taking place. A basement, office space with a door you can close, the upstairs of the home – if your remodel is in the basement, etc.
Having a safe space for your pet to retreat to or be kept separate in, out of way of workers and construction debris, is important to both your pet’s physical health and well being as well as emotional.
2. Let your pet investigate.
Let your pet investigate. It could be a good idea to let your pet investigate or sniff around the space while workers are not there. Just be sure you are watching to make sure your pet is safe.
3. Arrange for time away.
If your pet is anxious by nature, you may want to arrange for time away from the home during any noisy parts of the project. You know your pet best, so make arrangements that will help them to feel comfortable.

4. Check with your vet.
Make sure to check with your vet for any suggestions. They might have specific suggestions for your pet, based on personality, breed, age and home situation.

Remember – Safety first. There are many items that could be very dangerous to your pet’s health within the remodeling process. When in doubt, keep them out. And don’t forget courtesy to the folks that are working hard on your home – although many of them may also love your furry friend, some may have reasons to avoid your pet, such as allergies.
Be sure to connect with your remodeler to arrange details about pets. No matter who your pet is, or what your project is, you want to be sure that everyone is health and happy when it is time to enjoy your new spaces.
