Project Details

This homeowner loved her Minnetonka town house with its unique layout and warm wood tones throughout. She appreciated that it was not the newer, traditional townhome layout found everywhere else, and treasured the location with its easy access to highways and stores. However, sometimes the main living spaces got a little too dark. And while she liked the open staircase and the large windows – she wished the windows didn’t let in so much cold air in the winter!

When it came to frustrations about her home, above all, she frustrated by the kitchen. One wall of kitchen cabinets was a closet that had been converted into cabinet space. While that was a creative and interesting idea, the cabinets were so deep things that would get lost. There was no useable prep space next to the stove, countertops were filled with grout lines that trapped crumbs and food debris, and knobs could not be added to the cabinets by the stove – because then the stove would not open. There was no good place for garbage – it was always in the way.

After exploring various design options, our team was ultimately able to transform and update this kitchen without any changes to the floorplan or footprint. Function and all features were updated, and select areas opened up to create more space and flow.  This  project is a great example of how great change can happen within a home – sometimes without even having to tear down walls, add space or change floorplans.

For this townhouse kitchen remodel, our team used a bright, transitional design style, focusing on creating a space that would be cozy while embracing modern function.  The final kitchen design plan created more accessible kitchen storage, better flow, and a space that is much more efficient with the square footage available. Strategic pops of color, such as the glossy orange pendant light over the peninsula, add warmth and personalized aesthetic. This new kitchen is highly functional as well as beautiful, and the homeowner enjoys meals daily in her dining room, now warm and cozy while gazing out the adjacent sliding glass doors at the snow covered rooftops.

Top Homeowner Needs and Remodeling Goals

  • More efficient storage and flow in the kitchen
  • No more “ugly, dirty grout” to look at while cooking
  • The ability to chop food next to the stove – dedicated prep space (hurray!)
  • Weathered, debris-trapping countertops replaced
  • Dedicated space for garbage cans – out of walkways, never in the way
  • New, durable cabinets that could ALL have handles (there were no handles on the cabinets by the stove – having them would block the stove from opening)
  • Cabinets that were all accessible, efficient, and the appropriate size for the space… while maximizing kitchen storage options (One wall of the kitchen cabinets had been a closet  – converting it left behind extremely deep shelves that lead to things getting lost and most of the storage awkward and unusable.)
  • A new sink (the lip on current sink made it difficult to properly clean)

Cosmetic updates on the entire main level, including

  • Remove the worn and weathered 40-year-old carpet
  • Replacing the drafty original windows – not energy efficient and very drafty!
  • Replace the cracking tile with aged, “dingy” look
  • New sliding doors on on patio and windows in the living room
  • New, fresh paint

“My dream is to have new sliding doors, an updated kitchen, and new flooring on the whole main level.”

Aesthetic Goals:

  • Bright but warm
  • Practical
  • Comfortable
  • Clean lines
  • Wood tones
  • Quartz countertops – for look and function

“I like my home to feel cozy, warm, not stark. I am not afraid of color.”

Color and Material Highlight

Kitchen material palette showcasing wood grain flooring, matte blue cabinets with black hardware, speckled white counters, and dark brown wood panels.
