Project Details
These homeowners loved the open floorplan between their kitchen and family room, as well as the home’s gorgeous hardwood floors and large windows looking out onto their yard. They adored the neighborhood and location, and had no desire to uproot the entire family and move. However, their 11 x 12 U-shaped kitchen was simply driving them crazy. As a large, active family of 5 – it was too small and cramped to comfortably accommodate them, or their busy lifestyle. They longed for more cabinet space and storage, more surface space for cooking, better flow, and better use of the available space. They dreamt of having a kitchen island, but didn’t know if that was even possible.
By removing the wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room, our team was able to successfully (and greatly!) increase storage space in the kitchen, and to not only create more cabinet space – but add a large, walk-in pantry. The main floor plan remains open, but now with great flow between all main floor spaces – from entry to dining area, porch to kitchen! The kitchen is now a hub of social and family time, multiple family members can use the kitchen at the same time, and, they even gained that island they dreamt of!
The new kitchen fits right into the home like it was built that way, and not only feels warm, bright, practical, and comfortable, as they’d hoped, but is packed with function and features. Their kitchen now makes everyday living easier, and is filled with the organization and efficiency they craved for years. The family couldn’t be happier with the end results – how their new kitchen works, feels and looks! (And the kids simply can’t get enough of all of the extra snack storage space.)
Key Homeowner Remodeling Needs
- Improved Space and Flow: The homeowners wanted a better main floor layout of their home that allowed for easy movement for their family of five and provided sufficient space for entertaining guests. They dreamt of being able to add an island to facilitate comfortable gatherings with additional serving, dining and gathering space.
- Enhanced Storage and Accessibility: They also wanted more storage that was accessible, and top dreams were of a dedicated pantry, an appliance garage, and roll-out shelves to keep counters clear of small appliances and clutter.
- Confidence in Hosting: A primary experiential goal was to feel more confident and capable of hosting family holidays.
- Priorities: Increased space and storage were the non-negotiables” for the remodeling project.
Aesthetic Vision
When asked to describe their dream kitchen, the homeowners stated they wanted a kitchen that felt:
- Warm
- Practical
- Comfortable
They wanted it to be bright and warm, and imagined quartz counters next to dark wood floors to stay consistent with the rest of the home.
Key Functional Goals
- Layout: They want to move away from the “U-shape” kitchen, which suffered from poor flow and insufficient space for food preparation and serving.
- Features:
- Appliances: Gas range and cooktop, double oven, built-in microwave, and high-volume hood.
- Cabinetry: Cabinetry to the ceiling, pantry (walk-in preferred), pot storage, trash/recycling centers, and vertical storage for cutting boards and trays.
- Sink/Fixtures: Under-mount sink, single bowl sink, and water filtration.
- Environmental: High-efficiency heating/AC/water heating, upgraded LED lighting, and non-VOC paint.
These homeowners now have the kitchen they dreamed of in the house they love. It’s perfect for family cooking time, hosting, homework, or simply easily accommodating all five of them running around at once. Plus, the entry was reworked to improve the flow from the garage through the mudroom and into the kitchen as well. All five humans – and the family dog – could not be happier with the end results.
